OUR STORY
Our name honors the Cuban history of palenques, referring to the communities and settlements formed by those who escaped enslavement. Not only did these spaces provide refuge for many, but Cuban dance and music are heavily influenced by this history. In this spirit, Palenke is a dance club oriented towards creating a fun, inclusive community for those interested in improving their social Cuban dance forms such as casino, rueda, and rumba as well as traditional bachata—a sound from the Dominican Republic that is heavily influenced by Cuban rhythms like son and bolero.
At Palenke, we aim to highlight what we love about Cuban dance: body movement that combines different elements of son, mambo, rumba, and Afro-Cuban movement. A style of "salsa" called casino, known for its circular motions, elegance, and improvisations. Lastly, the communal aspect of dancing together in a Rueda de Casino, where multiple couples dance in a circle with one person calling out the moves for the group. We are excited to share the richness and uniqueness of Cuban dance with you!
